Emma Maersk, a container vessel owned and operated by the A.P. Moller-Maersk shipping conglomerate, is the world’s biggest cargo ship. Launched in the year 2006, the Emma Maersk belongs to the E-Class fleet of container vessels and is the first vessel launched under this operational class. Apart from the Emma Maersk, the E-Class has a fleet of seven other container vessels that are also categorised as being in the list of world’s biggest cargo vessels.
Ship Details
Named after the late wife of Maersk McKinney Moller, the ship was built in the Danish Odense Steel Shipyard and is registered to the Danish port of registry.
A fire during the construction of the ship delayed and pushed the date of launch of the ship by a few weeks, however even in spite of the fire; the layout, the design and the overall construction of the ship are the most noteworthy aspects about this massive ship.
Specifications
- The world’s biggest cargo ship measures 397 metres lengthwise, 56 metres beam wise, 30 metres depth wise and has a draft of 15.5 metres
- The gross tonnage of the world’s largest ship is 1, 70,974 tonnes while the largest container has a dead weight tonnage (DWT) of 1, 56,907 tonnes

Container Capacity
Measured in terms of twenty-foot equivalent units or TEU, the container capacity of the longest ship in the world is around 11,000 TEU as measured by the company. However, as per the international measurement equivalent and standards, the capacity comes to around anywhere between 13,000 to 15,000 TEU. The world’s largest ship can carry 1,400 more containers as compared to the other container vessels in operation. For its utility as a mammoth cargo vessel carried out in an environmentally and ecologically sound manner, the largest container was the recipient of the Ship of the Year award according to the prestigious Lloyd’s List, in the year 2007.
Measurement of the cargo storing and carrying capacity of such container vessels can be measured in a number of ways. As per the company’s calculation policies, the cargo carrying capacitance is measured on the basis of total weight of container weight onboard – each container holding up to a capacity of 14 tons. On the other hand, the cargo capacitance policy executed by the other corporations is on the basis of the total number of containers that a container vessel can hold at a single time.
The world’s largest ship is not just known for its huge shipment capacity. The ship and the company are truly an inspiration and a beacon of hope for the preservation of marine navigation and the entire marine ecosystem.
