UECC Collaborates With Shipping Giants To Test CNSL-Based Biofuel Solution
In a ground-breaking collaboration with Lloyd’s Register FOBAS, engine manufacturing major Wartsila, and biofuel supplier firm ACT, United European Car Carriers (popular as UECC) is evaluating a cashew nutshell liquid (abbreviated as CNSL) based biofuel.
As part of this alliance, ACT developed a CNSL-based biofuel, the FSI.100. Following stringent testing on different blend combinations, the biofuel obtained its approval from the engine manufacturers as a 30% blend ingredient in a distillate DMA fuel oil, cleared by OEM, flag administrations, and Class for sea-trial phases.
Per UECC, using such a biofuel helps reduce waste, promote resource efficiency, and utilize sustainable land use methods.
The unique CNSL-based fuel comprises top-notch maritime features like ultra-low sulfur and winter-spec pour points. It delivers substantial GHG savings with well-to-wake emissions reductions of about 90% compared to traditional maritime fuels.
The UECC recognized the importance of comprehensive evaluation and transparency in sustainable fuel procurement, which assures the reliability and safety of operations when combining unestablished biofuel feedstock with marine fuels.
UECC is also proud to direct the industry in not just executing creative solutions but also coming up with a blueprint for the vital assessment of future fuels like the CNSL-based FSI.100, which carries great potential for sustainable shipping, mentioned Daniel Gent, the energy and sustainability manager associated with UECC.
UECC urges industry stakeholders to prioritize collaboration, rigorous assessment, and transparency in sustainable shipping solutions. The maritime industry can navigate toward a more sustainable future with innovative approaches and efforts.
